Round 10 - Match report: Bombers take the win

What a game of footy! Sunny, clear skies, twenty-two degrees and to top that off we had 22 players coming out to Parc Champêtre, Montreal this afternoon. It was the first full 9-a-side game this season. It was great to see our players, spectators and volunteers enjoying the sunshine and footy.

With 9-a-side per team and another two interchange players per team Round 10 was sure to be a fast free flowing game. The first goal was kicked by the Bombers within about 15 seconds of the centre-bounce and it was quite clear how the rest of the game might turn out. The Bombers with first time players Ben Beagley and Matthew Payne (Team Canada) used their skills well in the centre and moved the ball with the assistance of Paul Fairbrother. Fairbrother who once again played a dominant position in both ruck and a key forward ended up kicking 5 goals throughout the game and is well on the way to be the leading goal kicker this season.

The rest of the game was close and there were some hard fought battles between both sides. Some key differences in the overall game play of each team was how the Bombers managed to work well in numbers. Every time they had possession there was 2-3 players running side by side, shepherding and making use of quick handballs. Throughout the centre of the field and in the backline working in numbers was the key difference in how the Bombers managed to get so many on the scoreboard. By half time the scores had the Bombers maintaining control of the game; Bombers: 8 goals 6 behinds-54 to the Saints: 3 goals 3 behinds-21.

In the third quarter the Bombers continued their consistent use of fast ball skills and breaking through tackles to put four on the board. Ronan Shaughnessy and Vincent Mousseau had an excellent quarter in the back-line. When the ball made it down there they managed to gain possession quickly and push the ball forward again. The Saints were left scoreless in the third.

The final quarter saw the Saints Nathan Jacobs and Kyle Graham start to make better use of open space on the wings and bring the ball forward. N. Jacobs managed to get two on the scoreboard for the Saints. The Bombers however were quick to respond and put five on the board by the end of the last quarter in what was a convincing win.

Final score: Bombers 17.8-110 to Saints 5.3-33

Leading goal kickers for 2011 update!

Paul Fairbrother is well on his way to be the 2011 Quebec Saints leading goal scorer. Paul has played in all of the nine games this season and thus doing so has managed to rack up 20 goals with an average of 2.2 goals per game. Chris Micheletti who is a close second with 18 goals has participated in four games is pretty close behind but Paul should be a shoe in to take out the award this 2011 season.

"Le 10e match - Quel match de footy!"

Quel match de footy! C’est sous un ciel ensoleillé et dégagé avec 22°C que 22 joueurs se sont retrouvés au Parc Champêtre à Montréal cet après-midi. C’était la première fois que les deux équipes jouaient à 9 joueurs. Quel plaisir de voir nos joueurs, spectateurs et bénévoles s’amuser ainsi au footy.

Avec 9 joueurs par équipe et deux autres joueurs remplaçants par équipe, le 10e match de la saison se devait d’être un match enlevant. Le premier « goal » a été produit par les Bombers dans les premières 15 secondes après le début de la rencontre, et cela laissait déjà présager comment aller se dérouler la partie. Les Bombers jouissant pour la première fois de deux nouveaux joueurs Ben Beagley et Matthew Payne( de l’équipe canadienne de footy), ont profité de leur talent au centre du terrain avec l’assistance de Paul Fairbrother. Fairbrother qui encore une fois à dominé le « ruck » et la zone de centre de l’avant, ce qui lui a permis de marquer 5 fois durant la partie et qui est en pole position pour obtenir le prix de Meilleur marqueur de la saison.

Le reste de la partie a été serrée et il y a eut quelques dures batailles entre les deux équipes. Les Bombers ont fait la différence par leur occupation du terrain. Chaque fois qu’ils entraient en possession de la balle, il y avait 2-3 joueurs qui couraient côte à côte utilisant un jeu de passe à la main rapide. Ce travail en surnombre au milieu de terrain et dans la ligne de défense explique la différence au tableau d’affichage. A la mi-temps, les Bombers gardaient le contrôle du match : Bombers : 8 goals, 6 behinds- 54 pour Saints Saints: 3 goals 3 behinds-21.

Le troisième quart temps voyait les bombers poursuivre leur jeu de passes rapides et ils profitaient de quelques plaquages ratés pour inscrire 4 majeurs de plus. Ronan Shaughnessy et Vincent Mousseau ont eu un excellent quart dans les lignes arrières. Dès que le ballon était au sol dans leur zone, ils en prenaient possession pour la remonter rapidement vers l’avant. Les Saints sont restés muets dans le troisième.

Le dernier quart temps a vue Nathan Jacobs et Kyle Graham des Saints utiliser les ailes pour amener la balle devant. Nathan Jacobs a inscrit deux goals pour les Saints. Toutefois, les Bombers furent rapides à répondre et marquèrent 5 goals pour ce dernier quart temps dans ce qui restera une victoire sans équivoque.

Round 9 - Saints outright victors

The rain held off this afternoon at Parc Champêtre in Montreal with only a brief shower before the game. When the centre bounce got underway the Saints were very quick to put a quick goal on the scoreboard. Tim Nixon got the first from an excellent display of ruck work by Tom Delaney, who came down from Ottawa to play along with three of his team mates. In what was a close battle, both teams managed to get a couple on the board with Kelvin Thursby adding another one for the Saints then the Bombers came back with two goals from Robert Gordon and Lachlan Trumble. The scores at quarter time were very close with the Saints only up by 4 points 2.7-19 to 2.3-15.

The second quarter got under way with Delaney winning the majority of the hit outs and the Saints continued to clear the centre extremely quickly. The Saints displayed accurate ball work in the centre seeing them put five goals on the scoreboard by half time. The Bombers managed one for the quarter. The half-time scores were 7.12-53 to 3.5-23.

The Saints continued to shine throughout the 3rd quarter kicking four goals against the Bombers display of two. With the continuing dominance in the centre the Saints were able to kick into their forward-line successfully.

In the fourth quarter the Saints ran home with an outright victory. An excellent display of team work by Saints first gamers Nathan Jacobs and Vivien Didelot throughout the forth helped further put the Saints out in front to bring home the victory.

Final score: Saints 16.18-114 to Bombers 6.9-45.

Round 8 - Saints win by 14 points

Another great game was played last Saturday afternoon in Montreal for Round 8. Six players from the Ottawa Swans came to assist with numbers due to a large contingent of Quebec Saints players involved in the International Cup in Australia.

Showing speed and agility the Saints' Ronan Shaughnessy (an ex-Saints player from Ireland) assisted the Saints in the centre kicking one of the three goals in the first quarter. Luke Walsh also added one to the scoreboard by the end of quarter time for the Bombers.

In the second the Bombers got off to a great start with some excellent ruck work by Paul Fairbrother and centre work by Ryan Oxley and Chris 'Rock' Peck who added one each for the Bombers. Some inaccurate kicking could have seen the score higher but they managed to get in front bringing the score at half time with the Bombers up by 9 points 3-9-27 to 3-1-19 and leaving the Saints scoreless in the second quarter.

In the 3rd quarter otherwise known as the 'premiership quarter' the Saints made a comeback. Kelvin Thursby and Jay Goldhawk (his second for the game) put two on the board by. With the Bombers only managing one in the 3rd quarter the game was extremely close with the scores almost tied at 5-4-34 to 4-9-33.

In the final quarter, some notable on-ground performances by Thursby and Shaughnessy assisted the Saints forward-line to rack up another 3 goals bringing the Saints to a very close victory by 14 points.

Final score: Saints 8.8-56 to Bombers 5.12-42.

Following the 2nd Annual TA (tourtiere australien) pie eating contest this past Sunday, July 17th, the Quebec Saints presented owner Don with a pair of official 2011 season shorts, complete with TA logo on the left.

As you can see in the picture, Don was happy as anyone who has tucked into one of his pies with the way they turned out. In fact, we'd go so far as to say we've never seen a kiwi happier holding a Sherrin and wearing a pair of footy shorts before. Many thanks to Don and TA for their continued support of the Saints. We hope the partnership lasts for many years to come.

In the pie eating contest itself, Vinco Mousseau took out the Saints internal competetition by downing 4+ pies in the alloted 10 minutes. Next best were coach Mat Wilson with 3 and Will Teissier with 2. Definiteily looking for better results next year.

Friday Night Match - A Nail Bitter

A large step forward for the ECAFL occurred in Round 3 as the first ever match under lights was held at Parc Champêtre in Montreal. Again, both teams were slightly undermanned as the Bombers and Saints faced off under the Friday night lights.

The Bombers carried plenty of momentum into round 3 after a heroic last gasp win in round 2. They started extremely well with the return of Lachy Trumble translating into dominance at the contests. Accurate kicking from Paul Fairborther (including 3 second quarter goals) and another set of missed opportunities from the Saints saw the Bombers leading by 3 points at half time, 4.1-25 to the Saints 3.4-22.

It seemed that once again the Bombers were set to finish the game stronger in the final term after the third was a neutral struggle with both teams scoring 1.2. However, A back injury to the Bomber’s solid first half contributor Dave Wilson as well as determined work all around the ground from 1^st year Saints Will Tessier (2 goals) and Kelvin Thursby saw the Saints finish much stronger despite again missing several easy chances at goal. Neil Koch also impressed in his first game in the ECAFL, despite an inaccurate last quarter he finished with 3.5. Final score Saints 7.11-53 to the Bombers 5.4-34.

Round Two, A Close Finish

Round 2 of the ECAFL 2011 season saw the Saints and Bombers face off in perfect conditions for football. Despite both teams being slightly undermanned, a fantastic contest took place at Parc Champêtre.

In the first half, it appeared the Saints were starting where they left off in Round 1, taking control of the game from the first bounce and kicking 4 goals to 2 in the first half. The return of key playmaker Mat Wilson saw the Saints compete hard in the midfield. Despite the hard work in the midfield, Wilson was responsible for several key misses in the second quarter that, if converted, would have seen the Saints skip clear before half time. At half time the Saints lead by 14 points, 4.3-27 to the Bombers 2.1-13.

Still smarting from the round 1, second half blowout, the Bombers came out hard in the second half with Paul Fairbrother key in the midfield and Vince Mousseau solid in defense. The third term was a tight struggle that saw only 1 goal scored by either team, the saints leading by 9 points at the last change.

In the last quarter, the Bombers made the Saints pay for missed opportunities in the 1^st half. Despite the hard work from the Bombers the Saints still lead by 1 point with less than a minute to play. A strong contested possession in the midfield by Ash “Smasher” Gasperino and a hard run forward from Paul Fairbrother was rewarded, with the Bombers kicking the winning goal as time expired. Final score Bombers 7.3-45 to the Saints 6.4-40.

After a long cold off-season, the 2011 ECAFL Season kicked off at the new Saints home field, Parc Champêtre. Under grey skies and after several days of heavy rain, the soggy ground ensured a hard slog for the Saints and Bombers to open the season.

The first quarter proved an even affair and it seemed the closeness of last years final series was going to carry over into the 2011 season. Solid contributions from Kyle Graham and star Bombers recruit Paul Fairbrother ensured an arm wrestle in the first quarter with the saints taking a slim 1 point lead into the first change.

After quarter time though the saints took control of the match through consistent hard work in the midfield by Graham and Kelvin Thursby and some spectacular hard running from defense by veteran Greg Bretiere. The saints kicked 4 goals to none in the second to lead by 29 points at half time, the Saints 6.6-42 to the Bombers 2.1-13.

It was more of the same in the second half, and despite a valiant defensive effort by Canadian National Team representative Margot Legault, Chris Michiletti kicked 4 second half goals and helped the Saints run out winners by 68 points.

Greg Brétière debuts for TEAM FRANCE

The Québec Saints trusted backline general, Gregory Brétière, has capped off a brilliant eighteen months of footy by debuting for TEAM FRANCE in the countries first ever 18-a-side International Match against Germany last week. Brétière becomes the fifth Saints player to represent their country, and the first to do so for France.

The match was held in Paris as a warm-up for the French team’s first assault on the International Cup (to be held in Australia in August), and while there were positives signs for the French team, Germany were ultimately too strong and won Germany 13.5 (83) to France 2.7 (19).

Brétière commented that the French team are still learning how to work as a group but the talent in the team is undeniable. It was a good first hit out from a team that will only improve with each game it plays together.

Another Saint William Teissier and former Saint James-Robert Theis will also be added to France’s line-up for IC2011. Kyle Graham will be pulling on the jersey for Canada while Margo and Aimee Legault along with Lindsay Belzie are all part of the Canadian women’s team.

A.Legault, from Angel to Devil

Aussie Rules football was born in the southern Australian state of Victoria, and it’s no surprise that some of the countries strongest leagues reside around the paddock in Melbourne in which the game was first played.

The Victorian Women’s Football League (VWFL) is considered by many to be one of, if not the premier, elite women’s Aussie Rules competition in the world. And for season 2011 that is where Canadian and former Montréal Angel Aimee Legault decided to play, setting herself the ultimate challenge – to play with the best.

In North American women’s Aussie Rules, Aimee Legault’s achievements in such a short space of time (she made her Aussie Rules debut in late 2009) are nothing short of outstanding. She was awarded the Montréal Angels MVP two years running (2009-10), was awarded ‘Most Consistent Player’ of the 2009 U.S Nationals tournament before backing it up with ‘Player of the tournament’ in 2010. Aimee also starred in her club’s 2010 Canadian Nationals victory, booting seven goals and claiming Best on Ground honours alongside her sister Margo Legault who captained the team. Clearly the girl’s father Ron Legault’s interest and passion for Aussie Rules has rubbed off on his two daughters.

The question was always going to be asked, how will a young inexperienced Canadian girl go playing against some of Australia’s best? Aimee’s goals were simple to start with – just make the team. As worry and anxiety crossed her mind about whether or not she could make the cut, or even just gain a place in the reserves squad, all she wanted was the chance to let her newly adopted club – The East Burwood Devils – see her play. They did, and the results are nothing short of superb.

The Devils are currently sitting in the top four (4-3) with a healthy percentage and one eye on playing in the post-season. Their Canadian import not only made the senior squad (first division) but has played every match booting 11 goals in seven games sitting second on her club goalkicking and 13th overall in the league. While those around Aimee had faith in her talent and determination, nobody expected the impact the West-Islander would have amongst the game’s elite.

The International Cup is now only 3 months away, and Canada will be one of the favourites in the women’s division to claim the cup. The Legault sisters have been pivotal in Team CANADA’s success to date, it’s scary to think what almost a year of football in Australia will do to the already sublime game of the famous number 10.

Toronto Rebels and Ottawa Swans square off in the ECAFL Preseason Cup

The ECAFL Preseason Cup has been run and won with the Ottawa Swans securing an impressive 3-Peat in the tournament adding to their already impressive trophy cabinet of ECAFL silverware. It was a day of cracking football enjoyed by all with newcomers to ECAFL football the Toronto Rebels pushing the Swans to the limit in the cup final.

Pre-Season Tournament UPDATE

A new field to have the pre-season tournament on has been secured. The location is 4300 rue Notre Dame Est Montréal, QC H1V 2L7. It is at the intersection of Notre-Dame and Letourneux.

The field natural turf which means that player should definitely bring cleated footwear as it has been raining a bit the past couple of days. All other details are the same (be there at 10am SHARP)

For those already in Montreal, you can access the field by metro and bus:

Option 1: Take metro green line until Pie IX and then take the line 134 direction south at 9:45 am until Notre-Dame. You can then walk to the field.

Option 2: Take metro green line until Papineau and then take line 34 direction east at 9:50 am until Pie IX.

USEFUL INFO: Water and toilets will be provided for the Tournament. We will run a BBQ and have fresh drinks available. We will also have Québec Saints hoodies and raffle tickets to sell

Remember to also get your memberships for 2011 before they get more expensive on May 2nd. This can be done online (see right), by cash or cheque at the tournament.

Attention all Saints!

This weekend is our big annual pre-season tournament and the premier footy event in Quebec to kick off the 2011 regular season. We will be hosting 2 ECAFL teams plus the Montreal Shamrocks, 2 teams from the Ottawa Swans AFC and the Toronto Rebels AFC.

WHERE: This year we will play in Laval, at Collège Letendre next to the Montmorrency metro station on a brand new synthetic field. The address is 1000, boulevard de l'Avenir, Laval, QC H7N 6J6. There is another college and another field just next to this one. Be sure to enter the right one.

WHEN: The tournament will be held as scheduled on Saturday, April 30th. Please be at the field at 10 am as it is critical for us to start on time. We will make sure that the Toronto Rebels will not play the first games as they are coming from further away.

WHAT TO BRING: Bring boots with plastic studs and avoid metal ones. Bring some sun block (I know I'm very optimistic) as it is expected to be a bright sunny day in Montréal.

USEFUL INFO: Water and (hopefully) closing locker rooms with showers will be provided for the Tournament. We will run a BBQ and have fresh drinks available. We will also have Québec Saints hoodies and raffle tickets to sell.

After the Tournament, we will head downtown to celebrate in our sponspor's bar. Food, drinks and the second playoff round Canadian hockey game (finger crossed!) on top of that will be there to welcome you.

Upcoming Training Sessions

Now that spring is in full swing, we're moving outdoors for our training sessions.

Regular training will now take place at Parc Jarry (Metro Jarry, walk towards St Laurent Blvd) at 6:30pm Wednesday every week. Training is now free for all players and takes place at the red star in the image above, near basketball courts. Please bring cleated or studded footwear as indoor shoes are no good for outside grass. As usual, new players are always welcome.

In addition, a special footy skills training session will be taking place this Sunday (April 10th), 11am at Parc Maisonneuve (Metro Pie IX) near the corner of Sherbrooke East and Pie IX (near the skating rental building). An email to the Saints email list will be coming out shortly with more info.

In an effort to promote mens Australian Rules Football within the province of Ontario, AFL Canada in collaboration with the Ottawa Swans organised a training session for players who aspire to become members of the Northwind Program.

Lead by head coach Jaye Macumber of the Northwind (Canada's National Team), the session was the first of its kind in Ottawa. Last weekend, three members of the Quebec Saints travelled to the capital city to partake in this high intensity training session. Kyle Graham, Mat Wilson and Margo Legault were well impressed with the level of skills and enjoyed the overall experience.

With a lack of killer snowstorm during their second pre-season training session, the Quebec Saints hosted a large turnout of new and returning players at the Claude Robillard Sports Complex. With one of the largest turnouts in recent memory, the Saints club welcomed 13 new players, eager to learn about Aussie Rules Football.

With the start of 2011, so comes the start of pre-season training for the Quebec Saints!

This year's first training session kicks off at 8pm, Wednesday February 2nd at the Complexe Sportif Claude-Robillard (1000 Avenue Emile Journault).

The sports centre is close to Metro station Cremazie (on the Orange line), keep an eye out for the Australians bundled up in winter gear.

All are welcome, whether seasoned veteran or first time footy player so bring out the friends for a great season!

Training will be held every second Wednesday (except March 30th, see below) at the same time and the cost per session is $5 (to cover facility renting costs). First time footy newcomes get their first session free!

FRANCE CALLS ON ITS SAINTS AS IT PREPARES FOR IC 2011 IN AUGUST

French national team manager Cyril Talon says Team France is "200%" certain to make their International Cup debut down under in 2011. Les Bleus are one of a group of European nations who are hoping to make the pilgrimage to the home of footy for the first time this year, and have a big year of preparations in front of them, including international friendly matches, the ANZAC memorial match and national team training camps.
France has been home to Australian football clubs for some time now, with a few ups and downs along the way, but the past few seasons have seen rapid growth, with a number of club tournaments, the creation of a national league and seven senior clubs now in existence.
Talon explains that the squad currently consists of 26 players, eight each from the Paris Cockerels and Bordeaux Bombers, five from the newly-renamed Toulouse Hawks, three currently based in Montreal, Canada and two who are playing in Australia.

UNEARTHING CANADA'S NEXT AUSSIE RULES FOOTBALL 'CODE-BREAKER'

When Rugby league star-turned Australian Rules footballer Karmichael Hunt runs out onto the field for the Gold Coast Suns in 2011, the eyes of a nation will be scrutinizing his every move, ready to pass judgment that the ‘experiment’ has failed.

That experiment of course is that of a 24-year old Rugby superstar in his prime trading codes to succeed (and cash in) with Aussie Rules. It’s being touted as a brave and bold new move by the Suns. But players switching codes isn’t new in the AFL and certainly not in Aussie rules around the world. Canadian Rugby star Mike Pyke has successfully made the switch earning a regular spot in a top 8 team, Dean Brogan was a former National Basketball League star before pulling on the boots for the Port Adelaide Power and no one can forget the most successful of all ‘code-breakers’ Jim Stynes. The Irish sensation switched from Gaelic football and eventually was awarded Aussie Rules highest individual honour, the Brownlow Medal.

Canadian National Team Head Coaches Selected for the 2011 International Campaign

On behalf of the AFL Canada Executive and the National Team Selection Committee, I would like to formerly announce the appointment of Jaye Macumber and Stuart Grills as joint Northwind Head Coaches.

Stuart Grills - Has 24+ years of playing and coaching experience in Australia, Canada and the US. Highly respected across North America, Stuart is one of the most experienced players and coaches in North America with a division one US Nationals title under his belt. He is a founding member of BC Footy and will provide a direct link to the developing group of teenage players itching for a chance to play for Canada.

Jaye Macumber - Celebrated his 2nd year as Toronto Central Blues Coach with an OAFL Grand Final win and awarded OAFL Coach of the year. After a playing career in Australia and then with the Central Blues in Toronto, Jaye has the confidence of the current Northwind squad and is rewarded for being Northwind Assistant Coach since 2009.

The selection committee would like to thank the other applicants and the current Northwind playing squad for their patience during this very important selection. Both Stuart and Jaye have taken some time to consider the commitment required for this position prior to accepting the offer. The AFLC Executive together with the Northwind Management team look forward to a successful 2011 campaign to Australia.

NUMBERS DON'T ADD UP FOR A SAINTS TILT AT THE OAFL DIVISION ONE FLAG

Winning the premiership in the OAFL's premier division is a herculean achievement that requires a multitude of factors falling into place at precisely the right time. There is however one ingredient that has proven key in all 22 premiership recipes so far, and it's not a star Aussie import, super coach or band of Canadian Aussie rules veterans. As they say in real estate, it's all about location, location, location.

The numbers are so clear cut you can put all the teams into clearly defined zones. Around 30 minutes from the heart of footy in Toronto is the premiership zone. If your club is located within this zone it probably already has a premiership flag, 6 of the 7 clubs do. The one that doesn't has made it to the big dance on three occasions. The Conacher Cup has never travelled outside this area in it's entire 22 years of existence. The next zone is located around an hour from the epicentre of the GTA. We'll call it the battler zone. If your club is located here it has a win-loss record of less than 50% over the past five years. In recent times one good year of footy is usually followed by a slide back down the ladder the next. Venture further out, two hours plus and your located in the survival zone. Here the numbers are grim. No team has survived longer than five years in what has become the OAFL's wasteland. A wasteland that is littered with the bones of now defunct clubs the London Magpies and Windsor Mariners.

CANADA HAS EVERYTHING TO PLAY FOR AT INTERNATIONAL CUP 2011

Canada has to make the final four of the 2011 International Cup. Anything less than that will be deemed a failure. For a country that boasts one of the biggest leagues in the world outside of Australia, the next twelve months are going to be the most important in it's 22 year existence. All the ingredients are there for success: excellent junior development out west, solid playing numbers in Toronto and promising satellite programs in Calgary, Ottawa and Montreal. Canada has even already had one of their own make it in the big time.

The former club treasurer and team manager has been a major part of the behind the scenes day to day operations of the club for over twelve months and was a natural fit for the top job. He will be supported by new treasurer and vice-president Tim Nixon and vice-president Margo Legault.

The Quebec Saints announced it's 2011 coaching panel and it was no surprise West Australian Mathew Wilson has taken over the top job. The Saints spearhead forward took over the captaincy during the finals this year and has been part of the leadership group from day one. Another West Australian Darrin Haverhoek was named assistant coach and will also take on the role of Montreal Angels head coach. The official statement from the club was:
"We are pleased to announce that two of our greatest on-field leaders from 2010 will be leading the club heading into what is sure to be an exciting 2011 season. With the appointment of Wilson and Haverhoek we have no doubt that the Quebec Saints will rise to the next level in our short but proud history"

On Friday the 8th of October a monster was born. The 2010 Canadian Women's National champions Montreal Angels teamed up with the 2009 National champions Calgary Kookaburras in their bid to win the Women's U.S National titles. The Calgary/Montreal team has played two games so far destroying the Denver Bulldogs 9.1 (55) to 1.4 (10) and also easing past the Arizona/Columbus team 4.5 (29) to 2.0 (12). The Toronto Women's team are yet to register a victory in the tournament.

The Quebec Saints fought off a determined Central Blues outfit today to claim the 2010 OAFL Division 2 Premiership. In a tight first half the Saints burst open the match in the third eventually running away 48 point victors - the Saints 9.7 (61) defeating the Central Blues 2.1 (13).

Darrin Haverhoek took out best on ground honours for the match ending what has been an outstanding season for the West Australian.

The Quebec Saints completed a spirited final training session in Montreal Wednesday before looking to Saturday's Grand Final in Toronto. Although the Saints (7-1) will go into the game as favourites, the Blues (4-4) are quietly confident - even going as far as tipping themselves for a six goal victory. The Quebec Saints have reserved their second consecutive OAFL Division 2 Grand Final berth with a bruising 66 point victory over the Central Blues in Toronto today. After a tough battle in the first term that saw the Saints emerge with a slender 5 point they went on to outscore the Blues 11 goals to 2 in the final three quarters to secure the victory. Ryan Oxley and Ed Duff were unbeatable down back while Darrin 'The Diesel' Haverhoek and Shaughnessy carved up the midfield. Cam Beaman finished with 5 goals while new Saints captain Mat Wilson bagged 3 of his own. The Saints will face the winner of next week's Blues v Rebel Dogs Preliminary Final in the October 2nd Grand Final in Toronto.

The Pointe Claire Power withstood a galant effort by the Laval Bombers to win the 2010 ECAFL premiership. In a sensational day of footy in Quebec the Saints and Bombers played off in the preliminary final with the Bombers taking a come from behind win by a single goal. In the main event in what would be the ending of an era for the Laval Bombers (Cam Stark 2008,09,10 Bomber retires, Luke Anderson 2008,09,10 players retires and Daniel Barker 2008,10 retires) the ECAFL saw the dawning of a new one as the league's newest team with some big stars out of the line-up still managed to get the job done with a gutsy 3 goal win.

Best on ground for the day went to Angel Aimee Legault while best on ground for Edmonton was awarded to Alice Broughton. TRUMBLE ACCEPTS ONE WEEK BAN

Lachy Trumble pleaded guilty last night to a head high hit on Saints star forward Mat Wilson and accepted a one week ban which was downgraded due to the early plea as well as good behaviour. The down graded charge will enable the Power star to play in the ECAFL Grand Final. An update on the state of the welfare of Mat Wilson was not encouraging however. Initial fears of a irreparable damage were confirmed when Wilson, in a delusional state was ranting about a Magpies flag in 2010. Wilson is expected to make a full recovery in time for the Preliminary final against the Laval Bombers.

POINTE CLAIRE POWER STAR TRUMBLE SWEATS ON TRIAL BY VIDEO CHARGE

The Pointe Claire Power secured top spot and a guaranteed ticket into the 2010 ECAFL Grand Final with two victories in Round 5 of the ECAFL. Playing for the first time in the West Island the Power used their home ground advantage to man handle the '09 champion Bombers crushing the team from Laval to the tune of 77 points POWER 18.14 (122) def. BOMBERS 6.9 (45). In game 2 with everything still on the line the Power and Saints played out a classic, the Power holding on to take the win by 8 points. POWER 10.13 (73) def. SAINTS 9.11 (65). The 'Anthony Williams' trophy winner was also on the line for the leading goalkicker for the season. After recruiting some extra's for the Roos the Saints also requested the team use 'alternate' jumpers to avoid a clash of colours. Fitted out in retro jerseys the Roos and Saints battle got underway. The Saints dominating play for the entire game and enjoying 8 different goal scorers eventually ran out 67 point victors, 10.9 (69) to the Roos 0.2 (2).

The Quebec Saints kept their cool in Toronto and made in five wins in a row recovering from a sluggish first quarter to finally defeat the Broadview Hawks by 57 points. The Saints got off to a flying start but the experienced Hawks side kept pace trailing by only 3 points at quarter time. After an incident that saw a Hawks player yellow carded the Saints through Cam Stark, Mat Wilson and Tim Nixon made Broadview pay dearly on the scoreboard. The Quebec team slamming on 4 goals to zero in the second, the Hawks losing another player to a yellow card before the half was out. Seven goals to three after half time saw the Saints home comfortably. Mat Wilson outstanding up forward with four goals while Tim Nixon put on a clinic along half forward finishing with two goals himself.

CONGRATULATIONS!!! to Margo and Aimee Leagault who represented Canada on the weekend against the United States. Both girls performed supremely well and helped Canada defeat the U.S twice to claim the 49th Parallel Cup. The Canadian men didn't fair as well losing to the States in the closing stages of the match. Two other Saints, Ronan 'Big Guns' Shaughnessy and Chris 'Classy Coors Light' Lagace pulled on the boots for the OAFL Awfuls against the Boston Demons. The Demons emerged victorious but both players were once again amongst the best.

Round 4 was the ECAFL's "Call to Arms" charity match to raise money for Men's cancer research. As in the AFL it was the Bombers taking on the Saints in a pivotal match. The game saw a host of fresh faces added to the line-ups and after a tough first term it was the ladder leading Saints who had skipped away to an 11 point lead on the back of two goals to Sam Heath. The Bombers readjusted the match-ups for the second term and began the task of working their way back into the match. Bomber Daniel Barker began to look dangerous up forward and a 5 goal to 1 term had the Bombers back in front by 15 points at the main break. The second half was all downhill for the Saints as the Bombers midfield stepped up. Darrin Haverhoek, Daniel Barker and Nico Pouessel working well and being well supported by Lachy through the corridor. An injury to Saints ruckman Matt Wood further exposed the team as the Bombers piled on 16 goals to 3 in the second half crushing the ladder leading team to the tune of 96 points. Round 4 of the ECAFL "METRO" Footy will take this Sunday from 1pm at Parc Cluny in Laval. (Short walk from Metro De La Concorde). The Power will be looking for redemption this round while the Bombers are quietly confident they can thrust themselves back into contention for first place. All the answers will come Sunday. This round will also mark the end of Sam 'Des' Heath's footy career in Quebec. Sam and his family and heading off to Adelaide to soak up some Australian sun. It was almost three years ago now that Luke Anderson first floated the idea of an Aussie Rules team in Quebec. That idea started to become a reality when the first recruit - Sam Heath - signed up to play. Runner-Up in the 2008 Best and Fairest, Sam missed the entire 2009 season due to knee surgery. He returned in 2010 to the ECAFL and has been in career best form dominating the backline for the Saints. Sam's better half Steph Decelles has also been busy writing and publishing her first childrens book "Le reveil du dragon chinois". A perfect gift for the kids (or even for Aussies learning French!)

It was the 2nd placed Saints versus the 3rd placed Rebel Dogs this afternoon in Toronto but that didn't stop the Quebec side from crushing their opposition 13.10 (88) to 0.0 (0) and storming to the top of the OAFL Division 2 ladder. The Saints new look backline was sensational suffocating the Rebel Dogs, Ed Duff on fire across half back. Haverhoek, Stark and Wood were once again dominant in the midfield.

The Montreal Angels survived a downpour and some questionable opposition tactics to carve out another win over their Toronto rivals. The Legault sisters once again in dominant form ran riot, clearly a class above their opponents. The Quebec Saints travelled down to Boston last Saturday to take on the Boston Demons 'A' squad in a weekend of footy that would also showcase a Boston v Nashville main event. Ex-Saint and 2009 Premiership player PJ Devine now living in Boston and playing for the Demons pulled on his Saints jersey for the match. In sweltering conditions the Saints kicked a club record 9 goals to zero in the opening term setting themselves up for a massive win. Darrin Haverhoek, Mick Lacy and Aimee Legault leading the charge in the midfield. An injury to Aimee Legault in the second half saw the Saints playing a man down with no interchange, the Demons enjoying the luxury of a 10 man bench. The Quebec Saints are the most eastern located Aussie rules football club in Canada, based out of Montreal. And while they fight for recognition from their own governing body it seems the rest of the world is already taking notice of the football talent that is being churned out by the belle province. The club in its short existence has 8 international representatives, 7 of which would never have been uncovered had it not been for the team located in the French speaking province. What is impressive still is that only three of the players represent Canada, a spotlight on the unique cosmopolitan city that is Montreal. Cam Stark, Margo Legault and Aimee Legault all have the proud honour of wearing the maple leaf for Canada. Across the atlantic ocean the Saints two beloved Irishman, Declan Coyne and Ronan Shaughnessy have both been included into their national teams squad. The Irish incidentally are a higher ranked team than Canada, defeating the Northwind in 2008 to advance to the final four. Furthermore, as football continues to grow world wide, Quebec's unique French connection has come to the forefront with the Saints and the French national team joining forces in an effort to get France into the 2011 IC. Three players, James-Robert Theis, Greg Bretiere and Renaud Carbonnel have been included into the French team while Saints head coach Luke Anderson has been added to the new team in an assistant coach role. France has already officially nominated itself as one of the 21 nations intending on participating at the 2011 International Cup. Fingers crossed we have Canada, Ireland and France all grouped together in Melbourne 2011!!!

Saints and Dollarcinema unite to raise money for "Call to Arms" fight against cancer

With a weekend off from footy commitments the Quebec Saints teamed up with new sponsor Dollarcinema to help raise money for the "Call to Arms" fight against cancer. Saints players friends and family turned up to watch a movie for the cause at DOLLARCINEMA Montreal. Bernie and the gang at Dollarcinema donated the takings from the movie toward the Saints charity so a big THANKYOU to Bernie and all the Saints players that turned up.

Dollarcinema can be found on the second floor at 6900 Decarie square (5 minute walk from Metro Namur) or close by the Decarie and Jean-Talon junction. Movies are all $2, refreshments are all $1 and the movies shown are not yet on DVD and just finished at the regular cinemas. The Dollarcinema is always involved in raising money for charity so help out by stopping by and taking in a flick.

The Bombers finally opened their win account against the Saints in a match that had all the Halmarks of a theatre production. Down at half time, up at three quarter time the Bombers seemingly trailed in the closing minutes kicking three consecutive behinds. As the siren sounded for full time confusion reigned as the Saints thought they had taken the win by a solitary point. On official review of the scoresheet an error had been made, five minutes after the final siren the Bombers were awarded the four premiership points with a three point win. Bombers 8.8 (56) defeated Saints 8.5 (53)

Game two would be just as ferocious. The Power led early with excellent run out of the centre. A shot on goal that hit the post Power spearhead Cam Beaman was reviewed and awarded a goal, the Power holding on in the horendous conditions for a 7 point victory. Power 6.5 (41) defeated Bombers 5.4 (34).

SAINTS LOSE TO HARD RUNNING BLUES

The Quebec Saints concluded their back to back road trip to Toronto with a narrow loss to the top of the table Central Blues last Saturday. The undermanned Saints called on some help from their Angels, Eagles and Gargoyle friends to take on the Blues. The match started off as a goal for goal battle - but the hard running Blues with a little boost of talent in their own ranks managed to skip away to a three goal break and seemingly have the game under control. Sensational efforts by Cam Stark, Ash Gasperino, Lindsay Belzie and Mat Wilson gave the Saints one last surge at the Blues in the final quarter drawing to within a few points but two late goals to the Navy Blues gave them enough to get over the line. The Quebec Saints will travel to Toronto this coming weekend to take on the Toronto Central Blues in what will be a battle for top spot on the Division 2 ladder. The two arch rival teams finished '09 first and second and will be battling to snare the "PARKER ANDERSON CUP" which is on the line. The Central Blues have stepped up their Division 2 program this year and have emerged as premiership favourites while the Saints have a distinctly different look blooding seven new players un round one. The game will be the fifth head to head between the two clubs, the Saints currently having the edge at three games to one, 2-0 at home in Ottawa and 1-1 on the road in Toronto. The match will kick off at 2PM at the University of Toronto field.

The Central Blues Division 2 team has moved into top spot and possibly premiership favourtism with a crushing 73 to 15 victory over the Etobicoke Roos in round 2. The Saints, early season favourites for the flag managed a gritty win over the Roos in round 1 but will get a chance to measure up against the reborn Blues on May 29th in the PARKER ANDERSON Cup match. The Ottawa Swans claimed back to back preseason titles today cruising to victory over the Laval Bombers. In the women's cup the Angels took two victories defeating the Toronto Central Blues. It's around 12 weeks until the kick off of the 2010 ECAFL Pre-Season Cup and already their is a buzz of anticipation around the league. So far 5 teams have committed to the Men's Cup, The Saints, Bombers, Pointe Claire Power, Montreal Shamrocks and Ottawa Swans will all go head to head while rumours suggest there may even be a sixth team in the mix. This year will see the first women's ECAFL Cup with the Angels and Shamrocks womens squads confirmed and the possibilty of the Central Blues womens squad has also been thrown around.
The Saints and Bombers will have a very different look to their line-ups this year as both teams look to the Pre-Season draft to firm up team lists. New club the Pointe Claire Power is also on the recruitment trail, inside sources suggesting they may trade away their number one draft pick in order to secure the services of Irish sensation Ronan Shaughnessy. Quebec Saints present Sydney Swans Mike Pyke with 2009 premiership jersey

Quebec Saints members Luke and Dani Anderson recently presented Mike Pyke of the Sydney Swans with a Quebec Saints jersey as a tribute to the Saints being the first team to win the "Mike Pyke Cup". The 200cm ruckman for the Swans said he was "flattered" to have a premiership cup named after him. Mike Pyke is the first Canadian to ever play Australian Rules football in the AFL.
Now living in Sydney on Coogee Beach Mike has settled into Australian life well and is looking forward to a big 2010.

Quebec Saints Luke and Dani Anderson recently returned to Australia flying in from Los Angeles on the same flight as the Collingwood Magpies AFL club. The Magpies were returning from pre-season high altitude training in Arizona. After the 16 hour flight Saints president Luke Anderson took the opportunity to get a photo with Collingwood legend Nathan Buckley who happily wore the colours of the Bleu et Blanc.

Three Montreal Angels competed this weekend at the U.S Nationals, North America's biggest Aussie Rules tournament that was held in Mason, Ohio. Part of a three city team, the Angels were teamed with the Toronto Blues women's team and Sacramento Ladies Aussie Rules team. Margo Legault, Lindsay Belzie and Aimee Legault all first year players were thrown into the deep end against teams that have been playing for years and all did exceptionally well. The Eastern Canada/Sacramento team losing their first game to one of the tournament favourites Calgary, then lost a hard fought match against Arizona in which they outscored the American team in the second half. The icing on the cake was a hard defensive victory in game 3 over the New York Magpies, an amazing effort from the team.

SAINTS STORM INTO FIRST GRAND FINAL

The Quebec Saints delivered a statement in week 1 of the OAFL DIVISION 2 FINALS series with an emphatic 103 point demolition of the Central Blues. Splitting the regular season honours at one game a piece, the Blues went into the match knowing they had the Saints measure on Quebec's previous road trip to Toronto. This time however the Saints would get a fair shot at the legitimate Blues Division 2 squad and in doing so proved that the last round match up that saw the Saints run away 71 point victors was no fluke.
The Saints dominated in every position. The midfield combination of Matthew Wood, Ben Vawser, Greg Bretiere and Cam Stark winning every single centre clearance giving forward Shane Blight a field day and a club Division 2 record 8 goals. The only bad news for the Saints was the injury to star ruckman Matthew Wood early in the second half. The Saints will now enjoy the week off and wait to see who out of the Hawks and Roos will be there Grand Final opponent.

At the 2009 Quebec Saints Awards night it was Cam 'Cam Down' Stark and Ben 'Maximus' Vawser who took home the Best & Fairest awards for their respective categories. Cam won the Canadian/World Best and Fairest whilst also claiming the overall club MVP honours. Ben won the Australian Best & Fairest after a stellar year. Runner -Up in the Canadian/World category was Ronan Shaughnessy, Luke Anderson Runner-Up for the Australian award.

First year phenom J-R 'JimBob' Theis claimed Rookie of the Year, while Saints goal sneak and first year player himself Nick 'Showtime' Switzer was awarded the '09 Coach's Award.

The Montreal Angel's player of the year was awarded to Aimee Legault for an outstanding season, one that will continue with Margo and Lindsay at the U.S Nationals.

The winner of the 'Anthony Williams Medal' for leading goalkicker in the ECAFL went to Cam Stark after his 28 goals in 7 games. The 'IRONMAN' award for players playing over 75% of the matches were awared to Cam Stark, Ben Vawser, Ronan Shaughnessy and Luke Anderson. Mark of the year, also caught on film went to Cam Stark after his beauty on PJ in the ECAFL GRAND FINAL.

Last but not least Anthony Williams took home Runner-Up int the 'What the Puck!?' award for his post-game ECAFL GF speech while the winner of 'What the Puck!?' went to JimBob for his excellent crowd control and transformation into the 'Veggie Mad Hulk"

BOMBERS WIN 2009 ECAFL GRAND FINAL

The Laval Bombers have made it back to back premierships with a record winning margin today in Laval. After a tough first quarter where the Montreal Saints jumped to an early two goal lead the Bombers hit back with four of their own and a 2 goal lead at quarter time. A 5 goal to zero second term extended the Bombers lead to 47 points. The flood gates opened after half-time as the Bombers added 18 second half goals to zero to take out an emphatic 156 point victory.
The "Fleur de lys" medallist went to Renaud Carbonnel who played an outstanding match in the ruck for the Bombers, while Ben Vawser picked up the "Southern Cross" Medal for his fantastic game in the midfield.

Saints put up galant fight in Ottawa slog

In appalling conditions today the Saints challenged the Swans for three and a half quarters before eventually falling by 33 points. In a 'friendly' match-up between associate Div1 and Div2 clubs the Saints welcomed 6 High Park Demons and 4 Montreal Angels into their team, the Saints first ever hit out against their partner club.
With constant rain making playing conditions extremely tough the Swans started the better of the two clubs, adapting to the conditions well and although the Saints had more of the ball the Swans were impressive in the execution in the wet kicking 5.2 to the Saints 0.3, the Saints unlucky to have a goal denied by a dubious umpiring decision.
After some direction from coach Shane Blight and assistant Declan Coyne the Saints came out on fire in the second, completely dominating possesion. Carl Ferreri, Chris Lagace and Aimee Legault all running rings around their opponents. Unfortunately for the Saints they couldn't capitalize on the scoreboard kicking 2.5 to the Swans 1.0 to trail by 18 at the half. Tempers rose as the Saints refused to give in, the match marred by some ugly incidents as both teams threw everything into the contest. Some Swans greatful that there will be no video review on one particular incident. Again woeful kicking in front of goal wasted the Saints fantastic work, at three quarter time the Saints 2.12 trailed the accurate Swans 8.2.
With two tired teams playing in the most difficult of conditions the Saints did their best to work themselves back into the game but a goal midway through the last sealed the match for the Swans. The Saints although having more possesion and inside 50's wasted their opportunities and finally went down

PARKER-ANDERSON Cup in the Saints hands til 2010 after Quebec down Central Blues by 71

With all the drama of the top of the table clash the fact that the Saints also claimed the PARKER-ANDERSON cup took a back seat in the headlines. The Cup was presented by former #3 Quebec Saint and now Toronto Central Blues Head Coach Jaye Macumber to Luke Anderson, the trophy will remain with the Saints until 2010 when the two teams lock horns once again.

Saints and Angels complete a demolition job on Central Blues

The Montreal Angels fresh off a 1 point victory last week took on the Central Blues women's team in Ottawa today. The Angels didn't know what to expect but showed they were more than ready exploding out of the blocks and completely dominating play. Aimee Legault and Lindsay wreaked havoc in the middle while Dani Anderson and Elaine were too classy up forward. In the only forward surge for the Blues of the quarter Mirabell chased down two Blues preventing them from even getting close to a score. Margo Legault and Mel added the finishing touches as the Angels ran out convincing winners Angels 14.8 (92) defeated Central Blues 1.1 (7)

In the men's game it was an OAFL Division 2 top of the table clash. The Saints were confident heading into the match having their best line-up all year finally on the park. The onslaught started from the first bounce, the fresher Saints used the ball with precision piling on 4 quick goals. Matthew Wood incredible in the ruck and the on-ball brigade finally had some focal points to aim for in Pat the Gap and Mick Lacy. The Saints led at half-time 47 to 0 and unfortunately for the Blues it didn't stop there. The Saints added another 5 goals, the Blues kicking two of their own but eventually falling to the new top of the table team. Saints 12.12 (84) defeated Blues 2.1 (13)
